VST plugins
From Ambisonia
[edit] VST Introduction
VST is an acronym for Virtual Studio Technology.
VSTs are software "plug-ins" that are generally used by software Digital Audio Workstations (or DAWs) in order to perform operations on audio data. They come in two flavors, instruments (or "VSTi") and effects (simply "VST").(See the Wikipedia article here.)
Most popular and professional audio applications support VSTs in some way, and the way in which audio is transformed or generated by VSTs is essentially unlimited so long as the software conforms to the VST specification.
Additionally, many DAWs have support for multiple technologies, depending on platform (Mac, Linux, Windows) and DAW version.
For point of contrast, Apple maintains its own competing Audio Unit specification. Other technologies include Microsoft DirectX ("DX" effects or "DXi" for instruments, largely a deprecated technology for music-making), RTAS for Pro Tools DAWs, and DSSI for Linux platforms.
