Playing DTS files on 5.1 Home Theatre systems
From Ambisonia
For best results, all DTS files downloaded from Ambisonia should be:
- played back on a system where the speakers are arranged in a square (note: the centre-front speaker is not used)
- listen from the centre of the square.
There are several ways to play back DTS files:
[edit] Burn to CD, play in DVD player
Download DTS files from Ambisonia.com. Once you have downloaded several, burn them to an Audio CD as though they were any normal stereo file (even though they are not stereo files).
Note that DTS files should be burned as an Audio CD (not a Data CD).
Place the Audio CD in any hardware or software DVD player that is hooked up to a Surround Sound Amplifier... and hit play.
[edit] Play from Software on a computer
If you have a 5.1 capable sound card then you should be able to play the DTS files directly from a software DVD player like WinDVD.
The VLC Media Player is also able to directly play DTS files (and Dolby Digital AC3 files) and is available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.
Another option, if you have a digital connection from your computer to your surround amplifier, is to send the stereo DTS stream directly to the amplifier, which will then recognise and decode the two channels into 5.1 surround. This will not work with some sound cards (since some sound cards tamper with the sound output).
