Up one level
Here are a number of recordings, mainly of the choir that I also sing in. The older ones are in horizontal B-format, made using a "native" B-format assembly consisting of three AKG Blue Line microphones, and the recent ones are fully periphonic, using a Core Sound TetraMic. The mechanical arrangement of the Blue Line microphones changed each time I used them, and I have included some photos of the various setups. Although my day jobs since 1971 have always been as one or other sort of computer guru, I have a long background in recording - starting at university (where I was privileged to share my hobby with Michael Gerzon and Peter Craven), going on briefly to BBC radio as a Studio Manager, and much more recently making a number of commercial CDs as a help to my son in getting his career off the ground. A couple of photos from my early years are also here.

This is the torrent file which will download a zip file containing three of my clips encoded to AAC/MP4 using the free Nero AAC encoder.
Image of a DTS CD by Paul Hodges — last modified 2007-03-02 06:43
This file is the torrent file for downloading a zip file containing CUE and WAV files which can be used to burn a DTS CD. The WAV file is DTS encoded, so DO NOT attempt to play it in a CD player, but only in a DVD player with a DTS decoder. Only four speakers are used, which should be placed in a square. The three tracks are Duruflé - Ubi Caritas, Widor - Kyrie, and Applause from my previously uploaded ambisonic files. The conversion to G-format was done using VVMic version 2.7b2, which has (unlike earlier versions) a square preset. The encoding to DTS was done with the $99 "SurCode CD Pro DTS" from Minnetonka.

POA Course, spring 1969 by Paul Hodges — last modified 2006-11-04 10:10
This photo shows the members of the BBC's training course for POAs (Programme Operation Assistants - a short-lived name for Studio Managers) in the spring of 1969. An arrow points to me. Front left is Jenny Abramsky, now director of BBC radio and music.
Native B-Format Mic - First Arrangement by Paul Hodges — last modified 2006-07-22 00:26
This arrangement of three AKG Blue Line capsules does not place them in a straight line. The reason for this is to have the omni capsule facing vertically so that the horizontal frequency response is as uniform as possible, because the music was equally divided front and back.
Native B-Format Mic - Second Arrangement by Paul Hodges — last modified 2006-07-22 00:30
The three AKG Blue Line capsules are in a straight line as close as possible in this arrangement (the MS bracket is a Schoeps, which gives a tighter spacing than AKG's), but it looks a bit wonky on the stand.
Native B-Format Mic - Third Arrangement by Paul Hodges — last modified 2006-07-22 00:33
Three AKG Blue Line capsules arranged vertically, as in the Nimbus-Halliday setup. This version was contrived to be symmetrical for easy hanging from a rope (though in the end it went on a stand)
Native B-format Mic - Fourth Arrangement by Paul Hodges — last modified 2007-03-27 01:37
This arrangement has the capsules in line, for minimum horizontal time errors; but unlike the Nimbus-Halliday arrangement this one has the omni W capsule at the bottom facing up, with Y and X above it. This makes the horizontal response uniform, at the expense of requiring a little equalisation to make the horizontal HF response flat (a bit like a mic with a response optimised for diffuse field use). The clip for the central mic (Y) is kept away from the capsules to reduce shadowing by using an angle adapter as an extension for the capsule, and using a small stereo bar to mount the clip conveniently.
