How to submit ambisonic files to this website

by etienne deleflie last modified 2008-02-19 13:11

To share your ambisonic files with the community (on this site), you need to make (and post) what is called a 'torrent'.  A 'torrent' is a small file that contains indexing information for the Bittorrent peer to peer system.

Making a torrent is actually very easy. These instructions are quite verbose to help you on the first round... but you'll only need to follow them once (hopefully!).

  1. Create an account. Click on the "join" button in pink bar above.

  2. Download and install the latest version of Bittorrent. The Bittorrent software can be downloaded from http://bittorrent.com. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent for more information.

  3. Create a torrent from your wav files.
    1. Create a *.amb format as defined here. To avoid naming conflicts, make sure you prefix all your recordings with yoru initials. eg. ED_car.amb. Please note that the recommended sample rate for submitting content to Ambisonia is 48kHz.
    2. From your OS's launch menu, launch Bittorrent-> Make Torrent
    3. Click "Add" and browse to your *.amb file, and select it. (Please do not create a torrent from a whole folder. Only include one *.amb file in the torrent. This will ensure that the ambisonic file can be transcoded to the other formats).
    4. In the "Announce URL" field, place the following URL http://ambisonia.com:8060/announce
    5. Click "Make" (if you are then prompted to launch a 'seed' then say yes and go on to step 5).

Note: It is important that the name of the *.amb file and the name of the *.torrent file follow the same pattern. If not, then the automatic translation mechanism will not work.

If the name of the file is ED_rolling_thunder.amb, then the name of the torrent must be ED_rolling_thunder.amb.torrent

    6. Close the "Make Torrent" application.
    7. Make sure the torrent is named: xxxxx.amb.torrent (i.e. both .amb and .torrent must be there. This will ensure that the ambisonic file can be transcoded to the other formats).

  4. Launch a torrent client on your torrent (this is the only tricky bit in the process). Once you have created your torrent, you need to create what is called a 'seed'. A 'seed' is a torrent client that has fully downloaded a particular file. This makes that file available for others to download... once others have a part of that file, they will be sharing it as well (this is called swarming and is the magic of Bittorrent). Note: some versions of the Bittorrent client will automatically ask you if you want to launch a 'seed'. If you said yes to this question, then you dont need to follow these steps... but please remember to leave the seed alive for at least a day (depending on the size of your ambisonic file).

To create a 'seed', simply open your newly created torrent with the bittorrent client (double clicking on the *.torrent file should do this). When you are prompted to save the file, make sure you save it to its _existing_ location. In a moment, the client will deduce that you already have that file on your file system and will display that you have 100% fully downloaded the file. Your file is now officially capable of being downloaded by any one who has a copy of your torrent...

  5. Go to the AmbisonicBootlegs site and submit the torrent.
    • Log in to AmbisonicBootlegs
    • click on 'my folder' (which is in the grey navigation bar above)
    • click on 'add item' -> 'ambisonic file' (also is in the grey navigation bar above)
    • fill in the details ... and make sure you include your torrent file at the end of the page.
Once your torrent has been submitted, the ambisonicbootlegs server will start downloading your files from your Bittorent client which is still open. Note: You will need to keep your Bittorent client open long enough so that the AmbisonicBootlegs server can download a full verison of your files. This will typically take around a day (for 300Mb)... so you need to leave your torrent client open for a day or two until the ambisonicbootlegs server has fully downloaded your file.... then you can close your client. (NOTE: you can check the progress of the upload through your torrent client).

  6. Change the status of your Ambisonicbootleg submission to "publish". In the top right hand corner of the submission page (in the grey navigation bar above), there is a status drop down box, click on 'state: public draft' and change it to 'publish'.
